He rose through the ranks of the Schutzstaffel to lead HYDRA, a special weapons division dedicated to Nazi supremacy.

Shmidt sought to reshape the world using the Tesseract, also known as the Cosmic Cube. During a confrontation with Captain America on a flying wing base, the energy of the cube reacted violently to Shmidt's presence. The blast disintegrated his flesh, leaving only his skull-like visage intact. This event transformed him from a human villain into a supernatural entity bound to the cosmic energy that killed him.
