The original Raymond Reddington was framed for treason by a secret organization called the Cabal and was killed. The man who later took his identity, known as "Red," is believed to be Katarina Rostova, who underwent extensive plastic surgery and assumed Reddington's identity to protect Elizabeth from the Cabal.
