Pennywise

Pennywise, known as It, is an ancient cosmic entity from a void called the macroverse. It arrived on Earth via an asteroid impact millions of years ago, landing in what would become Derry, Maine. For eons, It slept beneath the ground, awakening when humans settled above. It discovered that fear, especially that of children, was a potent sustenance. To hunt, It adopted the form of a clown, Pennywise, to lure prey. Its true form, the Deadlights, is a swirling mass of orange light that drives witnesses insane. Pennywise is a sadistic, manipulative predator who delights in terrorizing its victims before consuming them. It is patient and strategic, waiting 27 years between feeding cycles to allow fear to build. It taunts its prey with cruel humor, often quoting nursery rhymes or making dark jokes. Despite its playful demeanor, It is utterly alien and lacks human empathy. It is arrogant, believing itself invincible, which ultimately leads to its downfall. Pennywise first emerges in 1957, killing Georgie Denbrough by luring him into the sewers. This sparks the formation of the Losers Club, seven children who confront It in its lair. They wound It, forcing it into hibernation. In 1985, It awakens, and the now-adult Losers return to Derry. They face It again, this time in a ritual battle where they learn of its cosmic nature. They enter the Deadlights and, using the power of belief, tear out Its heart, seemingly killing It. However, It's destruction causes the collapse of Its lair. In the novel, the Losers escape, but It's fate is ambiguous; King later hinted It may still live.[edit]

Pennywise has become one of the most iconic horror villains in popular culture. The character is widely credited with intensifying coulrophobia, the fear of clowns. Tim Curry's portrayal in the 1990 miniseries set a standard for creepy clowns, while Bill Skarsgård's version in the 2017 film brought a new level of physical horror and unpredictability. Critics praised both performances, noting that each captured different aspects of the character's evil. Pennywise has spawned countless memes, Halloween costumes, and fan art, and its catchphrases like 'You'll float too' are instantly recognizable.
