Nick Fury

Nick Fury first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1963 as a cigar-chomping sergeant leading the Howling Commandos during World War II. After the war, he transitioned into espionage, eventually becoming a colonel and the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the world's premier counter-terrorism organization. His iconic eye patch came from a grenade explosion during a mission. In the Ultimate Marvel universe (2000), Fury was reimagined as an African American character, directly modeled after Samuel L.
