Maleficent

Maleficent was created by animator Marc Davis as the primary antagonist of Disney's 1959 animated feature Sleeping Beauty. Her design drew from multiple sources: the evil fairy in Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty, medieval demon iconography, and Davis's own studies of vampire bats and Komodo dragons. The character's name derives from the Latin maleficentia, meaning evil-doing. She was voiced by Eleanor Audley, who also played Lady Tremaine in Cinderella, and whose sophisticated, menacing delivery became a hallmark of the role.

In the original fairy tale by Charles Perrault (1697) and the Brothers Grimm's Little Briar Rose, the wicked fairy curses a princess after being overlooked at a christening. Disney expanded this figure into a full-fledged personality: regal, cold, and vengeful, with a distinctive horned headdress, flowing black and purple robes, and a staff topped with a glowing orb. Maleficent exudes an icy arrogance and a theatrical delight in her own wickedness. She speaks in a measured, sardonic tone, savoring the fear she inspires. Her defining trait is pride: she cannot abide being excluded or disrespected, and her curse on Aurora is as much a matter of wounded vanity as malice. In the original film, she is utterly remorseless, taunting her enemies and relishing their despair. She commands loyalty from her minions through fear, yet shows a certain affection for her pet raven Diablo, the only creature she trusts.

The live-action reimagining adds layers of bitterness and vulnerability. After being betrayed by Stefan, she becomes cold and withdrawn, but retains a fierce protectiveness over the Moors. Her cruelty is portrayed as a defense mechanism, and her eventual bond with Aurora reveals a capacity for maternal love that she herself did not expect. In Sleeping Beauty (1959), Maleficent's arc is straightforward: she is an implacable villain who curses Princess Aurora, kidnaps Prince Phillip, and is finally defeated when Phillip drives an enchanted sword through her dragon form, sending her plummeting into a chasm. Her role is to provide an unambiguous threat that the heroes must overcome.

The 2014 film Maleficent entirely reframes her journey. It opens with Maleficent as a young, winged fairy who protects the Moors, a magical realm. She forms a childhood friendship with a human boy, Stefan, who later betrays her by cutting off her wings so he can become king. Consumed by vengeance, Maleficent curses Stefan's infant daughter Aurora, but over the years she secretly watches the girl grow. She develops a maternal attachment, and when the curse activates on Aurora's sixteenth birthday, it is Maleficent's own tearful kiss, a motherly act of love, that breaks the spell, not a prince's. In the sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), she discovers she is the last of the Dark Fey, a persecuted race, and must confront Queen Ingrith's genocidal plot. Her dramatic entrance, iconic design, and Eleanor Audley's voice have made her a staple of Disney merchandise, theme park attractions such as the Fantasmic! dragon sequence, and Halloween costumes. The live-action films grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide combined, revitalizing interest in the character and introducing a more sympathetic interpretation. Angelina Jolie's performance earned widespread praise for adding depth and humanity, while the original remains a benchmark for animated villainy.
