Jorah Mormont

Jorah was born on Bear Island, the only son of Jeor Mormont, who would later take the black and become Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. As a young man, Jorah earned renown in the Siege of Pyke during the Greyjoy Rebellion, being among the first to breach the walls. For his valor, he was knighted by King Robert Baratheon himself. He became Lord of Bear Island and married Lynesse Hightower, a beautiful woman from the Reach, but the match proved disastrous. Lynesse's expensive tastes drove Jorah into debt, and to maintain her lifestyle he resorted to selling two captured poachers to a slaver, a capital crime in the North. Rather than face execution, Jorah fled into exile, abandoning his lands and his honor.
