Overview
Origin Story
Jessie was mass-produced as part of the Woody's Roundup merchandise line in the 1950s, based on a popular TV show. She was originally owned by a girl named Emily, who adored her and took her everywhere. But as Emily grew older, she outgrew her toys. One day, Emily donated Jessie to a charity box, leaving the doll heartbroken. Jessie spent years in storage under a bed, developing a deep fear of abandonment and claustrophobia. She later ended up in Al McWhiggin's collection, where she joined Stinky Pete and Bullseye as part of a complete Woody's Roundup set.
Personality
Jessie is brave, excitable, and fiercely loyal to her friends. She has a strong sense of adventure and loves to yodel and ride with Bullseye. However, she carries deep emotional scars from being abandoned by Emily, which makes her wary of forming attachments. She can be impulsive and stubborn, but she is also compassionate and quick to trust once someone proves their loyalty. Her claustrophobia is a major vulnerability, but she has learned to face her fears when her friends need her.
Story Arc
In Toy Story 2, Jessie initially wants to go to a Japanese museum to avoid being abandoned again. Woody convinces her to trust him and come to Andy's house, where she finds a new family. In Toy Story 3, she becomes the de facto leader of the toys when Woody is away. She leads the decision to donate themselves to Sunnyside Daycare, but regrets it when Lotso mistreats them. She overcomes her claustrophobia to rescue her friends from a trash incinerator and develops a romantic relationship with Buzz Lightyear. In Toy Story 4, her role is smaller, but she is given Woody's sheriff badge after he leaves to be with Bo Peep, cementing her as the leader of Bonnie's toys. In Toy Story 5, she takes on the role of sheriff and helps Bonnie navigate new friendships while dealing with a new tablet.
