Jason Bourne

Jason Bourne was born David Webb, a CIA operative recruited into the secret Treadstone program. After a mission gone wrong, he was shot twice and left for dead in the Mediterranean Sea. Rescued by a fishing boat, he awoke with no memory of his past, only a Swiss bank account number implanted in his hip. That account led him to a safety deposit box in Zurich containing multiple passports, cash, and a gun, all under the name Jason Bourne. The first novel, The Bourne Identity, follows his struggle to uncover his identity while being hunted by assassins from Treadstone.[edit]

Bourne is resourceful, pragmatic, and deeply moral, driven by a desire to understand who he is and to atone for the violence he committed as an assassin. He is fiercely independent, often distrusting authority, and possesses a quiet intensity. Despite his lethal skills, he shows compassion for innocents and seeks redemption for his past sins. In the original Ludlum trilogy, Bourne evolves from a confused amnesiac into David Webb, reclaiming his identity as a university professor and father while confronting the assassin Carlos the Jackal. The film series streamlines this: in The Bourne Identity (2002), he escapes Treadstone and falls in love with Marie Kreutz. Her death in The Bourne Supremacy (2004) drives him to uncover the truth about his past and expose Blackbriar. In The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), he confronts Treadstone's architect, Dr. Albert Hirsch, finally remembering his real name before disappearing. The fifth film, Jason Bourne (2016), finds him living off the grid, drawn back when a former ally reveals his father's role in Treadstone. Spin-off The Bourne Legacy (2012) focuses on Aaron Cross, a different operative, not Bourne.[edit]
