Irene Adler was born in New Jersey and began her career as a contralto singer. She performed at La Scala in Milan and became the prima donna of the Imperial Opera of Warsaw. After retiring from the stage, she married Godfrey Norton, a London lawyer. She became entangled with Wilhelm von Ormstein, the King of Bohemia, who later hired Sherlock Holmes to retrieve a compromising photograph she held.[edit]

Adler is sharp, independent, and resourceful. She possesses a keen intellect and a flair for theatricality. She is not malicious but values her autonomy above all. Her calm demeanor and quick thinking allow her to outmaneuver even Sherlock Holmes.[edit]

In her sole canonical appearance, Adler faces a threat to her privacy from the King of Bohemia. She anticipates Holmes's ruse, disguises herself to follow him, and escapes with her husband.
