Johnny Storm grew up in Glenville, Long Island, with his older sister Susan. Their parents died when Johnny was young, leaving Susan to raise him. He developed a rebellious, thrill-seeking personality early on. When Susan began dating Reed Richards, a brilliant scientist, Johnny often felt like the odd one out. In 1961, Reed secured a prototype rocket for a spaceflight, and the four of them, Reed, Susan, Johnny, and pilot Ben Grimm, launched without proper shielding. Cosmic rays bombarded the craft, mutating their DNA. Johnny discovered he could ignite his body into flames without burning himself. Unlike Ben, who was horrified by his rock-like transformation, Johnny embraced his powers immediately, seeing them as a ticket to fun and fame.[edit]

Johnny is the embodiment of youthful swagger. He's impulsive, cocky, and loves being the center of attention. He cracks jokes during battles, flirts with danger, and often acts before thinking. But beneath the bravado is a fiercely loyal person who would do anything for his family. He has a short temper, especially when someone threatens Sue or her children. Johnny matures over the years but never loses his core zest for life. In the 1960s, Johnny was the team's designated hothead, frequently clashing with Ben Grimm. He had solo adventures in Strange Tales where he teamed up with Spider-Man, forming a lasting friendship. A major turning point came during the "Unthinkable" storyline (2003-2004) when Doctor Doom used dark magic to attack the Baxter Building. Johnny, who relied on science, had to outwit a sorcerer, showing resourcefulness. In 2011, during Jonathan Hickman's "Three" arc, Johnny sacrificed himself to stop a horde of interdimensional monsters, dying in a massive explosion. His death devastated the team, especially Ben. He was resurrected in 2014 after being trapped in the Negative Zone, returning with a new appreciation for life.
