General Zod

General Zod was born on Krypton as Dru-Zod, a high-ranking member of the Kryptonian Military Guild. He believed in the ancient militaristic code of Krypton, advocating for strength and order above all else. Zod led a failed coup against the Kryptonian Science Council, which was opposed by Jor-El. As punishment, Zod, along with his allies Ursa and Non, was sentenced to the Phantom Zone, a timeless dimensional prison. He witnessed Krypton's destruction from within the Zone, fueling his hatred for Jor-El and his son, Superman.[edit]

Zod is fanatical, ruthless, and driven by a sense of duty to restore Krypton's glory. He views himself as a savior of his race, willing to commit genocide to achieve his goals. He is a master manipulator and strategist, but his arrogance often leads him to underestimate Superman. Despite his cruelty, he has shown genuine love for his family, particularly his wife Ursa and son Lor-Zod.[edit]

Zod first appeared in Adventure Comics #283 as a Phantom Zone escapee who gains powers under Earth's yellow sun. He was defeated by Superman and returned to the Zone. In John Byrne's 1991 reboot, Zod was a Kryptonian commander from a pocket universe who murdered its inhabitants, forcing Superman to execute him with gold kryptonite. Geoff Johns and Richard Donner's 2006 story Superman: Last Son introduced a new Zod who escaped the Zone with his family; his son Chris Kent was raised by Superman. In the New 52, Zod survived Krypton's destruction in a spaceship and attempted to terraform Earth, leading to a war with Superman. During Rebirth, Zod was manipulated by Mr. Oz and later became a reluctant ally against Rogol Zaar.[edit]

General Zod is widely regarded as one of Superman's greatest villains. Terence Stamp's portrayal in the 1978 and 1980 films set a high bar, making the character a pop culture icon. The line "Kneel before Zod!" has been parodied extensively. Michael Shannon's more tragic interpretation in the DCEU added depth, though opinions on his death in Man of Steel are mixed.
