Edward Cullen

Edward Anthony Masen was born on June 20, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois, to Elizabeth and Edward Masen Sr. In 1918, during the Spanish influenza pandemic, he fell gravely ill. His mother died of the disease, and his father had already succumbed. On his deathbed in a Chicago hospital, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, a vampire who had taken up medicine to atone for his nature, was moved by the boy's dying plea to save his mother. Carlisle transformed Edward into a vampire by injecting his venom into the boy's heart and then feeding him his own blood. Edward awoke as a vampire, his human life ended at age 17. Carlisle and his wife Esme adopted Edward, raising him as their son. Over the decades, Edward struggled with his vampire instincts, particularly his ability to read minds, a gift that made him acutely aware of the dark thoughts of humans. He saves her life multiple times, culminating in a confrontation with the tracker vampire James, where Edward nearly dies protecting her. In New Moon, believing he endangers Bella, he leaves her, plunging into a deep depression. He deliberately provokes the Volturi in an attempt to end his own life, but Bella and Alice rescue him. In Eclipse, Edward grapples with his jealousy of Jacob Black and reluctantly agrees to Bella's demand that she be turned into a vampire. In Breaking Dawn, he marries Bella, and during their honeymoon she becomes pregnant. The pregnancy nearly kills Bella, but Edward saves her by injecting his venom into her heart, turning her into a vampire. After Bella's transformation, Edward can finally read her thoughts, and the family unites to protect their daughter Renesmee from the Volturi, successfully proving she is not a threat. He frequently topped lists of 'sexiest vampire' and 'best fictional boyfriend' in publications like Entertainment Weekly and People. His relationship with Bella was both celebrated and criticized, with debates about its portrayal of romance and obsession. The character's popularity contributed to the Twilight franchise's $3.3 billion box office gross and over 100 million book sales worldwide.
