Cruella de Vil was born Estella to a wealthy family, though her early life is shrouded in mystery. In the original novel and animated film, she is already an established heiress married to a furrier, Mr. de Vil. Her obsession with fur, particularly Dalmatian puppy fur, drives her to kidnap 101 puppies from Roger and Anita Radcliffe. The 2021 prequel Cruella reimagined her origin: Estella is a gifted but rebellious young designer in 1970s London whose mother is killed by the Baroness, a rival fashion icon. After discovering the truth, Estella sheds her identity and embraces the persona of Cruella, a punk-inspired antihero out to dismantle the Baroness's empire.[edit]

Cruella is theatrical, vain, and utterly ruthless. She treats people as tools, discarding them when they cease to amuse her. Her love of fashion borders on mania, she believes a Dalmatian coat is the ultimate accessory and will stop at nothing to get it. She is also deeply intelligent and manipulative, using her charm and wealth to get what she wants. Beneath the glamour lies a sadistic streak; she takes genuine pleasure in the suffering of others, especially animals. In the 1961 film, Cruella kidnaps the Dalmatian puppies and pursues them relentlessly, only to be foiled by the dogs and their human allies. She survives and returns in the sequel 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure, where she attempts to steal the puppies again. The live-action films show her arrested and later released on parole in 102 Dalmatians, where she initially pretends to reform under a psychiatrist's care but eventually relapses. The 2021 prequel traces her transformation from a struggling young artist into the formidable Cruella, culminating in her taking over the Baroness's fashion house. Glenn Close's campy performance earned a Golden Globe nomination, and Emma Stone's portrayal in the 2021 prequel brought a new generation of fans.
