Cloud Strife

Cloud Strife grew up in the mountain village of Nibelheim, a quiet settlement under Shinra's control. As a child, he dreamed of joining SOLDIER, Shinra's elite military unit, hoping to impress his childhood friend Tifa Lockhart. At age 14, he left for Midgar and enlisted in Shinra's army, but he failed to qualify for SOLDIER and became a regular infantryman instead. During the Nibelheim incident five years before the main game, Cloud accompanied Sephiroth and a team of SOLDIERs to investigate a malfunctioning Mako reactor near his hometown. Sephiroth, upon discovering his own origins in Shinra's Jenova Project, went mad and destroyed Nibelheim, killing Cloud's mother. Cloud, wounded and traumatized, was captured by Shinra scientist Hojo and subjected to Mako infusion and Jenova cell injections alongside Zack Fair, a true 1st Class SOLDIER. For four years, Cloud and Zack were held in a Shinra mansion basement, until Zack escaped, carrying the comatose Cloud. Zack was killed by Shinra troops just outside Midgar, and Cloud, in a dissociative state, adopted Zack's memories and persona, believing himself to be a 1st Class SOLDIER. He rediscovers his will to live through his friends and a confrontation with Sephiroth, finally finding peace. The Remake trilogy introduces Whispers that enforce fate; Cloud defies destiny, suggesting a meta-awareness of the original timeline. His inclusion in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in 2015 was met with massive fan excitement, and his moveset, featuring the Buster Sword and Omnislash, became a favorite. Critics have praised Cloud's depth as an unreliable narrator, with his mental health struggles and fragmented identity praised for adding realism to the JRPG genre.
