Cersei was born in 266 AC at Casterly Rock, the firstborn child of Lord Tywin Lannister and Lady Joanna. Her twin brother Jaime arrived moments later, their hands clasped together. When Cersei was around seven, her mother died giving birth to Tyrion, and Cersei blamed the boy for Joanna's death, nurturing a lifelong hatred.

As a girl, she visited a woods witch named Maggy the Frog, who prophesied that Cersei would marry a king but have only three children, all of whom would die before her, and that a younger, more beautiful queen would cast her down. This prophecy shaped her fears and actions for decades.

Her father Tywin tried to betroth her to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, but King Aerys II refused. After Robert's Rebellion, Tywin arranged her marriage to the new king, Robert Baratheon. The union was miserable: Robert abused her, drank heavily, and kept mistresses. In A Feast for Crows, she rules as regent for Tommen but makes disastrous decisions: arming the Faith Militant, alienating the Tyrells, and indulging in affairs. The Faith arrests her for incest and treason, forcing her to undergo a humiliating walk of atonement through King's Landing. In the TV series, she retaliates by destroying the Great Sept with wildfire, killing her rivals and inadvertently causing Tommen's suicide. She then claims the Iron Throne for herself.

As queen, she grows increasingly isolated and paranoid, allying with Euron Greyjoy and feigning support against the White Walkers while hoarding forces.
