Bucky Barnes

James Buchanan Barnes was born in 1925 in Shelbyville, Indiana. He grew up as an Army brat alongside his younger sister Rebecca. Their mother died when they were young, and their father James Barnes Sr. was killed in a training accident in 1938. Bucky and Becca were adopted by their father's colleague Major Samson. Becca was sent to boarding school, while Bucky stayed at Camp Lehigh, becoming its unofficial mascot. He developed a side business smuggling goods for soldiers and showed natural talent in marksmanship and combat.

During World War II, Bucky enlisted and became the best friend and partner of Steve Rogers, the newly transformed Captain America. They fought together in the Howling Commandos against Hydra. During a mission on a train in the Alps, Bucky was shot and fell hundreds of feet into a river. Presumed dead, he was actually recovered by Soviet forces and Hydra agents. They experimented on him, enhancing his strength and speed, and gave him a cybernetic arm.
