Overview
Origin Story
Apocalypse was born En Sabah Nur in ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE, the first mutant ever recorded. Abandoned by his tribe due to his gray skin and blue lips, he was raised by desert nomads who instilled in him a harsh creed: only the strong survive. When the time-traveling Rama-Tut (Kang the Conqueror) ruled Egypt with advanced Celestial technology, the young En Sabah Nur led a rebellion. After Rama-Tut fled, En Sabah Nur absorbed the Celestial machines into his body, transforming into Apocalypse. Over millennia, he manipulated human and mutant history, orchestrating conflicts to cull the weak and elevate the strong, believing this would lead to a perfect race.
Personality
Apocalypse is cold, calculating, and utterly convinced of his own righteousness. He views morality as a weakness and sees himself as the necessary force to guide evolution. He speaks in archaic, grandiose phrases, often referring to himself in the third person. Despite his ruthlessness, he possesses a twisted sense of honor: he respects those who defy him and often offers his enemies a chance to join him. He is patient, having waited centuries for his plans to bear fruit, but can be wrathful when thwarted.
Story Arc
Apocalypse first emerged as a major threat in the late 1980s, manipulating the original X-Factor team into becoming his Horsemen in the "Fall of the Mutants" storyline. He later orchestrated the "Age of Apocalypse" event (1995-1996), a dystopian alternate timeline where he conquered the world. In the main timeline, he sought to absorb twelve powerful mutants during "The Twelve" (2000) but was defeated. After a period of dormancy, he returned in "Blood of Apocalypse" (2005-2006), possessing Gambit. In the 2010s, he joined the mutant nation of Krakoa as a leader and diplomat. During "X of Swords" (2020), it was revealed he had a wife, Genesis, and four children in the otherworldly realm of Arakko. He sacrificed his life to save Krakoa but was reborn as a child, stripped of his memories and powers, starting anew.

Reception & Legacy
Apocalypse is widely regarded as one of Marvel's most formidable villains, often placed alongside Magneto and Doctor Doom as a top-tier antagonist. The Age of Apocalypse storyline earned critical acclaim and remains a fan favorite. His design, with blue skin, prominent chin straps, and Celestial armor, is iconic. The 2016 film adaptation drew mixed reviews; while Oscar Isaac's performance was praised, the character's redesign and the film's pacing were criticized. Nonetheless, the film introduced Apocalypse to a broader audience and boosted his recognition. Among comic readers, he is respected for his sheer power and philosophical depth, though some feel his frequent returns have diminished his impact.
