    About This Album

Frank Ocean's debut studio album Channel Orange arrived July 10, 2012, on Def Jam Recordings. Following the buzz of his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra, Ocean teamed with producer Malay to write and record at EastWest Studios in Hollywood. Rather than lean on samples, he sought fresh sounds and structures, working with producers Om'Mas Keith and Pharrell Williams. Guests include Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator, André 3000, and guitarist John Mayer.

The album blends contemporary R&B, alternative R&B, and neo soul with electro-funk, pop-soul, jazz-funk, and psychedelic touches. Ocean's vocals shift between free-form flow, falsetto, and tenor. His lyrics explore unrequited love, decadence, class, and drugs through surreal imagery and dark narratives. The title references grapheme-color synesthesia; Ocean associated the color orange with the summer he first fell in love. The 10-track set (plus two bonus tracks) was released digitally a week early to thwart leaks. It spawned five singles, including the hit Thinkin Bout You, and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 131,000 copies in its first week. Critics hailed it as 2012's best album, and it won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2013 Grammys. Channel Orange remains a defining work of the decade.
