Channel 4 launched in November 1982 as the fourth public service television channel in the United Kingdom, filling a gap left by the BBC and the single commercial network of that era. Unlike its sister broadcaster the BBC, which relies on viewer license fees, Channel 4 operates as a publicly owned entity funded entirely through advertising revenue and commercial ventures.
