About
Chanel is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1910 by Gabrielle Bonheur Coco Chanel in Paris. The brand revolutionized women's fashion by liberating them from corsets and restrictive clothing, introducing modern, practical designs that emphasized comfort and elegance. Privately owned by the Wertheimer family, Chanel specializes in haute couture, ready-to-wear, accessories, fragrances, and cosmetics. Its iconic creations include the little black dress, Chanel No. 5 perfume, the Chanel suit, and the 2.55 handbag. The house operates approximately 310 boutiques worldwide and is known for its commitment to craftsmanship, exclusivity, and timeless style.
Under the creative direction of Karl Lagerfeld from 1983 to 2019, Chanel experienced a renaissance, blending its heritage with contemporary flair. Virginie Viard succeeded Lagerfeld, maintaining the brand's classic codes while evolving its aesthetic. Chanel's interlocking CC logo is one of the most recognized symbols in luxury fashion. The brand consistently ranks among the world's most valuable, with annual revenue around $8.6 billion as of 2023.
Mission
Chanel's mission is to preserve and perpetuate the legacy of its founder while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship, exclusivity, and timeless elegance. The house is dedicated to creating the most desirable and iconic luxury brand in the world, focusing on quality, innovation, and the preservation of traditional French artisan techniques. Chanel prioritizes long-term brand value over short-term profit, positioning itself as a guardian of luxury heritage.
History
Coco Chanel opened her first millinery shop at 21 Rue Cambon in Paris in 1910, selling hats. She expanded into clothing in 1913 with a boutique in Deauville, introducing sportswear-inspired designs that freed women from corsets. By 1915, she had a boutique in Biarritz and a reputation for modern, practical fashion. In 1921, she launched Chanel No. 5, created by perfumer Ernest Beaux, which became the world's most famous fragrance. The little black dress debuted in 1926, dubbed Chanel's Ford by Vogue for its simplicity and versatility.
After closing her house during World War II, Chanel reopened in 1954 at age 71, reintroducing the Chanel suit and the 2.55 handbag. She died in 1971. The Wertheimer family, who financed Chanel No. 5 in 1924, retained ownership. In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld became creative director, revitalizing the brand with bold runway shows and modern interpretations. Lagerfeld led for 36 years until his death in 2019. Virginie Viard succeeded him, and Leena Nair became CEO in 2022, the first woman in the role.
