    Overview

Matthias Linda released Chained Echoes in December 2022 as a labor of love that honors the golden age of Japanese role-playing games. Published by Deck13 Spotlight, this title arrived on platforms ranging from Linux and macOS to the Nintendo Switch and modern Xbox consoles. The game blends turn-based combat with exploration mechanics reminiscent of classics like Xenogears and Final Fantasy VI while introducing fresh systems for vehicle customization and party management. Players navigate a world fractured by war between three rival kingdoms, guiding a diverse cast of characters through a narrative driven by moral ambiguity rather than simple good versus evil.

The story unfolds across the continent of Valandis where the industrial empire of Galdos, agrarian Krasna, and militaristic Oshun clash over resources and ideology. You control Caelum, a young pilot who discovers he can wield mechs called Echoes powered by Aether energy. This resource also creates sentient Dolls, robots caught in the middle of political schemes that blur the lines between hero and villain. Every decision ripples through the plot, leading to multiple endings based on how you resolve the conflict surrounding the Dolls and the kingdoms.

Combat relies on visible encounters on the overworld map instead of random battles, letting players choose when to fight or sneak past enemies. Over fifty skills span attack, defense, support, magic, and tech categories, allowing anyone to build unique classes without being locked into fixed roles. Vehicle modification goes deeper than stat boosts; swapping engines, weapons, and armor parts on cars, tanks, airships, and mechs fundamentally changes how units perform in battle.

    Gameplay

Players traverse Valandis using seamless transitions between areas, solving puzzles and uncovering secrets hidden in diverse biomes. The absence of random encounters means every battle is a tactical choice rather than an interruption. Customization extends to vehicles where swapping engines and weapons alters performance stats drastically. This flexibility allows teams to adapt to specific enemy weaknesses or terrain challenges during exploration.

    Story

Caelum starts as a nameless boy before gaining the ability to pilot Echoes, machines fueled by the mysterious Aether. As the party grows, they uncover how the Dolls were created and why the war between Galdos, Krasna, and Oshun continues despite its devastation. Villains possess justifiable motivations rooted in survival or justice, forcing players to question their own alignment. The journey culminates in choices that determine the fate of sentient robots and the future stability of the three nations.
