    About

Celtic Football Club, founded in 1887 by Brother Walfrid, a Marist brother, emerged from Glasgow's East End with a mission to alleviate poverty among the Irish-Scots community. The club played its first match in May 1888, a friendly against Rangers that Celtic won 5-2. Since 1903, the team has worn its iconic green and white hooped jerseys, a look that has become synonymous with the club's identity. Celtic Park, also known as Parkhead, has been the club's home since 1892 and boasts a capacity of over 60,000, making it one of the largest stadiums in the United Kingdom.

Celtic compete in the Scottish Premiership and are one of only seven clubs worldwide to have won over 100 major trophies. As of 2025, they have amassed 120 major honours, the most of any European club. This includes a joint-record 55 Scottish league championships, a record 42 Scottish Cups, and 22 Scottish League Cups. The club's greatest season was 1966-67, when they became the first British team to win the European Cup, completing a historic quintuple by also winning the Scottish league, Scottish Cup, League Cup, and Glasgow Cup. Celtic also reached the European Cup final in 1970 and the UEFA Cup final in 2003, losing both times.

The club's fierce rivalry with Rangers, known as the Old Firm, is one of the most intense derbies in world football, rooted in religious, political, and cultural divisions. Celtic's fanbase, estimated at around 9 million worldwide in 2003, is renowned for its passion and global reach. An estimated 80,000 fans traveled to Seville for the 2003 UEFA Cup final, and their sporting behavior in defeat earned FIFA and UEFA Fair Play awards. The club's Irish heritage remains central to its identity, reflected in the use of the tricolour, Irish music, and the singing of anthems like You'll Never Walk Alone.

    History

Celtic was founded in 1887 by Brother Walfrid, a Marist brother, with the aim of raising funds to feed poor children in Glasgow's East End. The club played its first match in May 1888, a friendly against Rangers that Celtic won 5-2. By the early 20th century, Celtic had established dominance, winning six consecutive league titles between 1905 and 1910. The club introduced its iconic green and white hooped jerseys in 1903, a design that has remained ever since.

The 1960s and 1970s marked Celtic's golden era under manager Jock Stein. Stein led the club to nine consecutive league titles from 1966 to 1974, and in 1967, Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup, defeating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. That season, they also won the Scottish league, Scottish Cup, League Cup, and Glasgow Cup, completing a historic quintuple. Celtic reached another European Cup final in 1970, losing to Feyenoord, and later reached the UEFA Cup final in 2003, losing to Porto.

The modern era has seen continued success. Under Martin O'Neill (2000-2005), Celtic won three league titles and reached the 2003 UEFA Cup final. Brendan Rodgers' first tenure (2016-2019) brought unprecedented domestic dominance, including an invincible treble in 2016-17. After Ange Postecoglou's two-year spell (2021-2023) yielded back-to-back league titles, Rodgers returned in June 2023. In 2024-25, Celtic secured its 55th league championship, further cementing its status as Scotland's most decorated club.
