Ceará Sporting Club

Ceará Sporting Club, commonly known as Ceará or Vozão (Big Grandfather), is a professional association football club based in Fortaleza, the capital of Brazil's northeastern state of Ceará. Founded on June 2, 1914, by a group of young sportsmen including Pedro Freire, the club is one of the oldest and most traditional in the region. Its name was inspired by the state of Ceará, and the iconic black-and-white vertical striped kit, which earned the nickname Alvinegro, was adopted early in its history.

The team's primary home venue is Estádio Governador Plácido Castelo, commonly known as Castelão, which underwent major renovations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and now seats approximately 63,903 spectators. Historically, they also used Estádio Presidente Vargas, which opened in 1941 with a capacity of around 20,000 and remains in use for smaller matches and training. Ceará currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B after relegation from the Série A at the end of the 2022 season, and also participates in the Campeonato Cearense, the state league.[edit]

Founded in 1914, Ceará Sporting Club quickly established itself in the state championship, winning its first Campeonato Cearense title in 1915. Over the decades, the club became the most successful in the state, accumulating 46 state titles as of 2024. The 1960s and 1970s were particularly strong, with the team winning multiple championships and developing a fierce rivalry with Fortaleza Esporte Clube, known as the Clássico-Rei.

Nationally, Ceará has experienced periods of success and struggle. The club won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C in 2006 and secured the Série B title in 2018, earning promotion to the top flight. Their best Série A finish came in 2021, when they placed 10th. In the Copa do Nordeste, a regional competition, Ceará has been a strong contender, winning the trophy three times: in 2015, 2020, and 2023. The club's best performances in the Copa do Brasil include quarter-final appearances in 2005, 2011, and 2021.

Recent years have seen fluctuations. After relegation from the Série A in 2022, the team has been competing in the Série B, finishing 11th in both 2023 and 2024. The 2024 season also saw them finish as runners-up in the Campeonato Cearense, losing the final to Fortaleza. Throughout its history, Ceará has been known for its passionate fan base, with the organized supporters group Cearamor, founded in 2002, providing vibrant displays at the Castelão.[edit]
