About
Cdiscount is a major French e-commerce company, ranking among the largest online retail platforms in France. The platform offers a wide range of products to consumers, including electronics, household appliances, furniture, food and many other goods, functioning as a broad online marketplace and retailer serving customers across multiple categories. Established as one of the pioneers of online retail in France, it grew into one of the leading e-commerce sites in the country, competing with other major online retailers and at times boasting strong sales and growth that outpaced the broader market. Over the years it expanded its operations beyond France into several other European countries, broadening its reach and establishing a presence in multiple markets across the continent. The company has also developed a marketplace model, allowing third-party sellers to offer their products through its platform alongside its own retail offerings, a common feature among large e-commerce companies. As one of the prominent players in the French and European online retail landscape, Cdiscount has played a significant role in the growth of e-commerce in its home market, providing consumers with access to a vast array of goods through its website. Its position as one of the top online retailers in France has made it a notable name in the country's digital commerce industry.
Mission
Cdiscount's mission is to offer French and European consumers a broad selection of products at competitive prices through its online marketplace and retail operations. It aims to be a one-stop e-commerce destination, covering categories from electronics to fashion, and enabling third-party sellers to reach a large customer base.
History
Hervé and Nicolas Charle founded Cdiscount on August 26, 1999, in Bordeaux. The brothers had previously run a physical electronics store and saw an opportunity to sell computer hardware and electronics online. Within a year, the Casino Group acquired the company, providing capital for rapid expansion.
In 2008, Cdiscount launched its marketplace model, allowing third-party sellers to offer products on the platform. This move dramatically increased product selection and helped Cdiscount compete with Amazon. By 2011, the company expanded into Belgium and other European countries. Casino Group created Cnova N.V. in 2014 as a holding company for its e-commerce assets, including Cdiscount, and listed Cnova on Euronext Paris and the NYSE.
The company acquired NaturaBuy and MisterGoodDeal in 2015, and launched new services like Cdiscount Voyages and Cdiscount Energie in 2017. Emmanuel Grenier became CEO in 2019, steering the company toward profitability after years of heavy investment. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 drove a 20% increase in GMV, making Cdiscount the second-largest e-commerce site in France. Since 2021, the company has focused on margin improvement, launching Cdiscount Mobile and investing €200 million in logistics automation. In 2023, Cdiscount partnered with Fnac Darty for logistics and delivery, and in 2024 it launched a second-hand goods marketplace.
