About
The Carolina Panthers entered the NFL as the league's 29th franchise in 1995, founded by Jerry Richardson and based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The team began play at Memorial Stadium in Clemson while their permanent home, Bank of America Stadium, rose in Uptown Charlotte. From those early days, the franchise built a reputation for defensive intensity that would define its identity for decades.
Owner David Tepper took over the club in July 2018 after an investigation into workplace misconduct allegations against Richardson. Under new leadership, the team continued its competitive run, securing seven division titles and reaching two Super Bowls. Super Bowl XXXVIII ended in a loss to the New England Patriots following the 2003 season, while the 2015 squad fell to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. That 2015 team posted a remarkable 15–1 record behind MVP quarterback Cam Newton, marking the franchise's most successful regular season.
History
Ron Rivera served as head coach from 2011 to 2019, guiding the team to its second Super Bowl appearance. His tenure was followed by John Fox in an interim capacity before Matt Rhule assumed the role in 2020. Frank Reich and Chris Tabor also held the position during subsequent transitions. Dave Canales currently manages the roster as the team enters the 2026 preseason.
Recent performance data shows the franchise rebounding from an 8–9 season in 2025 to clinch the NFC South title and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. As of August 2026, quarterback Kenny Pickett has demonstrated passing accuracy in preseason games, including a touchdown connection with wide receiver Ja'Seem Reed. Free agents Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd made strong impressions during their debuts, though the team faced a 29–14 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. Running back Chuba Hubbard entered the season opener against the Chicago Bears with injury concerns.
