Benz's standing rests on a single patent and the industry it made possible. The 1886 Motorwagen patent is the founding document of the automobile, and the machine itself is held by museums as the first of its kind. His name is carried by the Automotive Hall of Fame, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and the Carl Benz School of Engineering at KIT. Mercedes-Benz marked the 140th anniversary of the patent with a nine-month, 65,000 km tour through 55 countries, a scale of commemoration that few engineers of the nineteenth century have received.
