Caribbean Premier League

The Caribbean Premier League, or CPL, is an annual professional Twenty20 cricket tournament and the premier T20 competition in the Caribbean. Founded by Cricket West Indies in 2013, it replaced the Caribbean Twenty20 and quickly became known for its carnival-like atmosphere, blending high-quality cricket with music and entertainment. The league features six franchise teams representing Caribbean nations and territories, playing a group stage followed by playoffs. Each team plays ten group matches, with all home games hosted consecutively in a festival format. The tournament moves to a new location each week, with matches often held simultaneously at two venues. This unique structure, combined with the vibrant Caribbean culture, has earned the CPL a reputation as one of the most colorful and enjoyable cricket tournaments globally.

The CPL serves as a vital platform for emerging Caribbean talent alongside international stars. Players like Dwayne Bravo, the league's all-time leading wicket-taker with 128 wickets, and Chris Gayle, one of the top run-scorers, have become synonymous with the tournament. The roots of the CPL trace back to the Stanford 20/20, a tournament bankrolled by billionaire Allen Stanford that ran from 2006 to 2008. That competition was derailed when Stanford was convicted of a massive fraud scheme, leaving a void in Caribbean T20 cricket. In December 2012, Cricket West Indies and Verus International, a merchant bank based in Barbados and New York, formally launched the Caribbean Premier League in Barbados. CWI president Dr. Julian Hunte expressed confidence in the franchise model's commercial viability. The inaugural season took place in 2013 with six teams, and the Jamaica Tallawahs won the first title, defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad.

The league evolved through the years, with team ownership changes and rebrandings. The Barbados Tridents became the Barbados Royals in 2021, and the Antigua Hawksbills were replaced by the St Lucia Zouks (later St Lucia Kings). The CPL introduced a spin-off T10 league called The 6ixty in August 2022, featuring modified rules like innings ending after six wickets and a 45-minute time limit for the fielding side.
