Hamilton Carhartt launched a company in Detroit back in 1889 that would eventually become the gold standard for heavy-duty work wear. The brand started by making durable jackets and overalls for railroad workers, miners, and farmers who needed gear that could survive harsh conditions without falling apart. Today, the business remains family-owned by Hamilton's descendants and operates out of Dearborn, Michigan. Their reputation rests on simple principles: make clothes that last, pay workers fairly, and keep quality high.

The company split its focus into two distinct paths during the late 1980s when it introduced Carhartt WIP (Work In Progress) in Europe. This European branch adapted the classic American silhouettes for streetwear enthusiasts and fashion lovers, creating a global footprint separate from the core industrial line. While the main brand stays true to its roots with rugged duck canvas and reinforced stitching for laborers, the WIP line brings those designs into urban environments with slimmer cuts and modern aesthetics.

Recent years have seen the brand expand its physical retail presence significantly. New locations opened at Jefferson Pointe in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and plans are underway for a store in Central Oregon within a former Cracker Barrel building by 2026. Marketing efforts often spotlight real tradespeople, such as the construction crews building the new Buffalo Bills stadium, reinforcing the connection between the clothing and the people who wear it daily.
