About This Album
Can't Be Tamed is the third studio album by American singer Miley Cyrus, released on June 18, 2010, by Hollywood Records. It was her final album under the label and marked a deliberate shift from her teen-pop image toward a more mature, dance-pop sound. The album was produced primarily by John Shanks and the duo Rock Mafia (Tim James and Antonina Armato), with additional contributions from Devrim Karaoglu, Ric Ocasek, and busbee. Cyrus co-wrote nearly all of the songs, and the project's edgier tone, exemplified by its bold title track and accompanying imagery, was widely seen as a statement of transition as she sought to distance herself from her child-star origins.
Commercially the album achieved moderate success without matching the heights of her earlier releases. It debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 106,000 copies, and charted within the top 10 in over 15 countries, including Canada, Australia, Germany, and New Zealand. The album received a mixed critical response; on Metacritic it holds a score of 56 out of 100, with critics noting formulaic production and lyrics that felt forced in their attempt to be edgy, though the title track's catchy hook and Cyrus's vocal delivery were praised. The lead single, Can't Be Tamed, peaked at number 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Platinum in the US, while the second single, Who Owns My Heart, charted modestly.
Even so, Can't Be Tamed holds an important place in Cyrus's discography as a pivotal step in her ongoing reinvention, foreshadowing the more dramatic artistic transformations that would follow later in her career and signaling her determination to control and redefine her own creative identity.
