Call of the Night

Nazuna Nanakusa skips class on a sweltering summer night and stumbles into Tokyo's neon-lit underworld where she meets Ko Yamori, a vampire who treats immortality like a casual lifestyle choice. Instead of fighting for survival or hunting humans, Nazuna begs to become one herself so she can finally feel at home in the shadows. Kotoyama crafted this story as a quiet character study rather than a horror thriller, focusing on how two lonely people find comfort in each other while navigating the strange freedom of the nocturnal city.

The series ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 2019 through January 2024, filling exactly 17 collected volumes with its blend of slice-of-life drama and supernatural romance. Viz Media licensed the English translation for North America, bringing the full run to Western readers after the original Japanese serialization concluded. The story balances whimsical moments with genuine introspection about social anxiety and the pressure to conform to daytime expectations. [edit]
