Call of the Night

Kotoyama's Call of the Night follows Nazuna Nanakusa, a middle school girl who skips class one night and meets Ko Yamori, a vampire living in Tokyo's neon-lit streets. Their chance encounter launches a journey exploring loneliness, identity, and the strange freedom found after dark. The series ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 2019 through January 2024, filling 17 tankōbon volumes with its unique blend of slice-of-life drama and supernatural romance. Viz Media brought the English translation to North American readers, while Liden Films adapted the story into an anime that premiered on Fuji TV's Noitamina block in summer 2022, followed by a second season in mid-2025. Critics praised the show's distinct visual style and emotional depth, which helped it win the 68th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category during 2023.[edit]
