    Overview

Call of Duty is a 2003 first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the first installment in the Call of Duty franchise, released on October 29, 2003, for Microsoft Windows. The game simulates infantry and combined-arms warfare of World War II using a modified version of the id Tech 3 engine. Unlike earlier shooters that often featured a lone wolf protagonist, Call of Duty introduced AI-controlled squadmates who support the player during missions and react dynamically to changing situations. This design placed a strong emphasis on squad-based play, creating a more immersive and chaotic battlefield experience.

The game's narrative is told through three distinct campaigns, each following a different soldier in the European Theater. The American campaign follows Sergeant Jack Evans of the 101st Airborne Division, from the nighttime airdrop into Normandy on D-Day to the capture of Sainte-Mère-Église. The British campaign features covert operations including the sabotage of the German battleship Tirpitz and the destruction of a V-2 rocket facility. The Soviet campaign begins with the brutal Battle of Stalingrad, crossing the Volga River and fighting through the city's ruins, culminating in the assault on the Reichstag in Berlin.

Call of Duty received universal acclaim upon release, winning several Game of the Year awards from outlets like GameSpot and IGN, as well as the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Computer Game of the Year. It sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide by 2006 and was the best-selling PC game of 2003 in the United States. An expansion pack, Call of Duty: United Offensive, was released in September 2004, adding new campaigns and multiplayer modes. An enhanced port titled Call of Duty: Classic was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2009, available via redemption codes in special editions of Modern Warfare 2.

    Gameplay

Call of Duty centers on squad-based combat with AI-controlled allies who provide covering fire and follow tactical commands. The health system uses a health bar that can be restored with medkits scattered throughout levels. The game features scripted events and intense firefights designed to mimic the camaraderie and danger of World War II combat. Players can use a variety of period-accurate weapons, including the M1 Garand, Thompson submachine gun, MP40, and Panzerschreck. Multiplayer supports up to 32 players online with modes like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, and Retrieval. Players choose from American, British, Soviet, or German factions, each with unique weapons and uniforms.

    Story

The game presents three interconnected campaigns set in the European Theater of World War II. In the American campaign, players fight as Sergeant Jack Evans of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, participating in the D-Day airdrop and subsequent operations in Normandy. The British campaign casts players as Sergeant Jack Evans (later Captain Price) of the 6th Airborne Division, undertaking sabotage missions including the destruction of the German battleship Tirpitz and a dam in the Ruhr valley. The Soviet campaign follows Private Alexei Ivanovich Voronin of the 13th Guards Rifle Division, starting with the desperate defense of Stalingrad in 1942 and ending with the final assault on the Reichstag in Berlin in 1945. Each campaign features distinct mission objectives and environments, from urban warfare to stealth operations.
