CAF Champions League

The CAF Champions League is the premier annual club football competition in Africa, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It features the top clubs from national leagues across the continent, competing in a format that includes a preliminary round, a group stage of 16 teams, and double-legged knockout rounds culminating in a two-legged final. The winner qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and the CAF Super Cup, where they face the CAF Confederation Cup champion. The competition is the most prestigious club tournament in African football, known for intense rivalries, passionate fan bases, and a history of dominant clubs from North and West Africa.

Originally founded in 1964 as the African Cup of Champions Clubs, it was rebranded to its current name in 1997. The most successful club is Al Ahly of Egypt with 12 titles, followed by TP Mazembe and Zamalek with 5 each. The current champions are Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, who won their second title in the 2025/26 season. The CAF Champions League was founded in 1964 as the African Cup of Champions Clubs, following the establishment of CAF in 1957. The inaugural edition in 1964 featured a knockout format and was won by Oryx Douala of Cameroon. The competition was initially limited to national league champions, but in 1997 it was rebranded as the CAF Champions League and expanded to include a group stage, mirroring the UEFA Champions League model. This change increased the number of matches and raised the profile of the tournament.

The 1970s saw the rise of Zambian club Kabwe Warriors, whose striker Godfrey Chitalu scored 13 goals in the 1972 campaign and set a world record of 117 goals in a calendar year. The 1990s brought success to Southern African clubs, with Orlando Pirates becoming the first from the region to win in 1995. Egyptian clubs dominated the early 2000s, with Al Ahly winning three consecutive titles from 2005 to 2008. The competition has continued to grow, with CAF investing over USD 48 million per season into African club football as of 2025. The 2019 final between Esperance Tunis and Wydad Casablanca was abandoned after a VAR malfunction disallowed a Wydad goal, leading to protests and a CAF investigation. The match was eventually awarded to Esperance. In 2020, the competition was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, causing scheduling disruptions and a condensed format.
