Cabinet Office

The Cabinet Office serves as the central administrative and decision-making department for the United Kingdom government. Established in 1916, its primary function is to provide support to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, ensuring the efficient operation of government. It also acts as the corporate headquarters for the British Civil Service, coordinating government objectives across various departments and ensuring policy delivery.

As of March 2026, the Cabinet Office employed over 5,385 staff, with a significant presence in Whitehall and Canary Wharf. The Prime Minister's Office at 10 Downing Street is an integral part of the Cabinet Office structure. Recent reforms have seen the creation of an Office for the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC), led by the Cabinet Secretary, Dame Antonia Romeo. This office encompasses the Prime Minister's London office, a new unit in Manchester, and core support functions. Additionally, a new AI Taskforce has been established, and many remaining Cabinet Office functions are being consolidated under a new "OneGov Delivery Agency" responsible for operational services like recruitment, pensions, and security vetting.
