BuzzFeed
United StatesAbout
BuzzFeed started as a lab for tracking viral content and turned into one of the most recognizable names in digital media. Founded in 2006 by Jonah Peretti and John S. Johnson III, the company built its early reputation on quizzes, listicles, and pop culture articles that spread like wildfire across social platforms. Today, BuzzFeed is a sprawling media and technology company with multiple subsidiary publications covering politics, DIY, animals, business, and more. Its revenue model relies heavily on native advertising, designed to blend ads seamlessly into the content so readers actually engage with them.
The company took a serious turn in late 2011 when it hired Ben Smith from Politico as editor-in-chief. Smith pushed BuzzFeed into long-form journalism and investigative reporting under the BuzzFeed News banner. Over the next decade, that division earned major honors: the National Magazine Award, the George Polk Award, and a Pulitzer Prize. BuzzFeed News eventually moved to its own domain, operating semi-independently from the main site. But the journalism arm was expensive to maintain. In April 2023, Peretti announced the shuttering of BuzzFeed News, laying off about 180 workers and folding news efforts into HuffPost, which BuzzFeed had acquired in 2020.
Financially, BuzzFeed went public in 2021 through a SPAC merger at a $1.5 billion valuation. The stock price cratered soon after, and by 2024 the company was valued at just $37 million. Facing severe financial strain, BuzzFeed agreed to be purchased by Byron Allen's family office for $120 million in 2026. The acquisition closed on May 27, 2026.
