Bursaspor

Bursaspor Kulübü Derneği, better known as Bursaspor, is a professional sports club based in Bursa, Turkey. The club's football team competes in the TFF First League, the second tier of Turkish football. Founded in 1963, Bursaspor dons green and white striped kits and plays home matches at the Bursa Centennial Atatürk Stadium, which opened in 2015.

The club's crowning achievement came in the 2009–10 Süper Lig season. Bursaspor clinched its first league title with 75 points, edging out Istanbul powerhouse Fenerbahçe by a single point. This made Bursaspor only the second club outside Istanbul to win the Süper Lig, following Trabzonspor's 1975–76 triumph. The title shattered the dominance of the "Istanbul Big Three", Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş, and remains a landmark moment in Turkish football.

Bursaspor has also tasted success in domestic cups, winning the Turkish Cup in 1986 and the Prime Minister's Cup twice. The club has a solid youth academy, producing several notable Turkish players. In Europe, Bursaspor reached the quarter-finals of the 1974–75 European Cup Winners' Cup and later competed in the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League group stage, facing Manchester United, Valencia, and Rangers.[edit]

Bursaspor was formed in 1963 through the merger of three local clubs: Akınspor, İstiklal, and Pınarspor. The goal was to create a single team that could represent Bursa in Turkish football. The club quickly rose through the ranks, earning promotion to the Süper Lig for the first time in 1967.

The 1970s brought Bursaspor's first taste of European competition. In the 1974–75 European Cup Winners' Cup, the team eliminated Finn Harps of Ireland and PAOK of Greece before falling to Dynamo Kyiv in the quarter-finals. That remains the club's deepest European run. Domestically, Bursaspor won its first major trophy in 1986, beating Altay 2–1 in the Turkish Cup final.

The 2009–10 season transformed the club's history. Under German coach Christoph Daum, Bursaspor won the Süper Lig title on the final day, defeating Beşiktaş 2–1 while Fenerbahçe drew its match. The championship sparked massive celebrations in Bursa and earned the club a spot in the Champions League group stage the following season. Although the European campaign ended with just one point, the title remains the club's proudest achievement.

Recent years have been tougher. Bursaspor was relegated from the Süper Lig in 2022 after a decade-long stay in the top flight. The club spent the 2023–24 season in the TFF First League, finishing sixth and reaching the promotion play-off semi-finals.
