Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. They compete in the NFL as a member of the AFC East division, playing home games at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. Founded in 1959 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Bills joined the NFL after the 1970 merger. The team's name honors an earlier Buffalo franchise from the All-America Football Conference, itself named for frontiersman Buffalo Bill. Drawing fans from western New York and southern Ontario, the Bills are the only NFL team that plays home games within New York State. The franchise is owned by Terry Pegula, who purchased it after the death of original owner Ralph Wilson in 2014. In 2024, the Bills became one of the first NFL teams to sell a minority stake to private equity, with 20.6% of the team sold at a $5.6 billion valuation, including 10% to Arctos Partners LP.

The Bills won back-to-back AFL championships in 1964 and 1965, the only major pro sports titles for Buffalo. They struggled for decades after, with just five winning seasons and three playoff appearances from 1967 to 1987. The team became a powerhouse in the early 1990s, reaching four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990 to 1993 but losing each one. That record of four Super Bowl losses is shared with the Minnesota Vikings for most appearances without a win. From 1999 to 2016, the Bills endured the longest playoff drought in North American major professional sports, a 17-year stretch that made them the last franchise in the four leagues to reach the postseason in the 21st century. Ralph Wilson secured the Buffalo Bills franchise on October 28, 1959, paying $25,000 to join the new American Football League. The team played its first game on September 11, 1960, losing to the New York Titans at the Polo Grounds. Early home games at War Memorial Stadium drew modest crowds, but by 1964 the Bills had built a championship roster under coach Lou Saban. That season, running back Cookie Gilchrist led the AFL in rushing and the defense allowed the fewest points in the league. Buffalo beat the San Diego Chargers 20-7 for the AFL title. They repeated in 1965, winning 23-0 against the same opponent in a game played in a blizzard at Balboa Stadium.

The AFL-NFL merger in 1970 placed the Bills in the AFC East. The 1970s were lean years, though O.J. Simpson electrified fans by becoming the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season (1973). Simpson's 2,003 yards came on just 332 carries, a record that stood until 1984. The team moved to Rich Stadium in Orchard Park in 1973, a suburban venue that eventually expanded to over 70,000 seats.

Marv Levy took over as head coach in 1986 and, with general manager Bill Polian, assembled a roster that defined the franchise. Quarterback Jim Kelly, running back Thurman Thomas, wide receiver Andre Reed, and defensive end Bruce Smith formed the core. The Bills introduced the no-huddle offense in 1989, a scheme that confounded defenses and propelled them to four straight Super Bowls. Each ended in defeat: a last-second field goal loss to the Giants in Super Bowl XXV, a 37-24 loss to Washington in XXVI, a 52-17 blowout by Dallas in XXVII, and a 30-13 loss to Dallas in XXVIII. The four consecutive losses remain an NFL record.

After the Super Bowl era, the Bills faded. They missed the playoffs for 17 straight seasons from 2000 to 2016, the longest active drought in North American pro sports. The drought ended in 2017 under first-year head coach Sean McDermott and rookie quarterback Josh Allen. Allen, drafted seventh overall in 2018, developed into an MVP-caliber player. In 2020, the Bills won the AFC East for the first time since 1995 and advanced to the AFC Championship Game, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. They won five straight division titles from 2020 to 2024, and Allen earned MVP honors in 2024 after leading the team to another AFC title game appearance. [edit]
