Bubsy
"The woolly bobcat who tried to beat Mario and Sonic."
Overview
The franchise began in 1993 with Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind for the Sega Genesis. Michael Berlyn created the character to compete directly with Nintendo's Mario and Sega's Sonic, giving him a confident, arrogant personality and the catchphrase "Ooh, wool!" The original two-dimensional entries found moderate success by focusing on side-scrolling platforming where players collected yarn balls to help the Woolies.
Momentum stalled after the 1996 release of Bubsy 3D, which critics panned for clunky controls and poor camera angles. This failure kept the series dormant for over twenty years while ownership shifted between Accolade, Infogrames (later Atari SA), Tommo, and Billionsoft. The revival efforts under Billionsoft in the late 2010s returned to 2D gameplay but received mixed reactions for repetitive design.
Atari SA re-acquired the rights in April 2023 to resume direct publishing duties. By early 2026, the franchise has seen a resurgence with the announcement of Bubsy 4D, a title that promises to blend modern visuals with the classic side-scrolling mechanics that defined the series' first chapter.
Gameplay
Players control Bubsy as he navigates levels filled with obstacles and enemies. The primary goal involves collecting yarn balls to restore them to their owners while rescuing other characters. Classic titles feature eight-directional movement and power-ups that increase jump height or allow attacks. Bubsy 3D attempted to translate these mechanics into a free-roaming 3D environment but retained the core objective of item collection.
Story
The narrative centers on Bubsy's quest to stop antagonists like the Woolies from stealing his wool or threatening his home. Stories remain lighthearted and comedic, featuring the protagonist's boastful nature and dialogue that breaks the fourth wall. A television pilot for an animated series was produced in the late 1990s but never aired.
