Amy Lee was 21 years old, sitting in a restaurant with a friend, when he asked a simple question: "Are you happy?" The words hit her like a shock. She realized she had been numb for years, trapped in a relationship that drained her. That moment became the seed for "Bring Me to Life," the song that launched Evanescence into the stratosphere.

Released in January 2003 as the lead single from Fallen, the track fused gothic piano, symphonic strings, and crunching nu-metal guitars. The label pushed for a male rap verse to ride the rap-rock wave, drafting Paul McCoy of 12 Stones. Lee resisted, but the compromise worked: McCoy's gritty delivery clashed against her operatic soprano, creating a dynamic that defined early-2000s alternative radio. Producer Dave Fortman, who had worked with Creed and Finger Eleven, helmed the sessions.

The song first appeared on the Daredevil soundtrack, giving it exposure before the album dropped. It hit number one in the UK, Australia, Italy, and Chile, and cracked the top five on the Billboard Hot 100. At the 2004 Grammys, it won Best Hard Rock Performance, beating out Metallica and Audioslave. The music video, directed by Philipp Stölzl, showed Lee dangling from a skyscraper in a nightgown, a visual that became iconic for a generation of goth-tinged rock fans. [edit]
