Bridge to Terabithia

Jesse Aarons, a fifth-grader from a poor rural family, dreams of becoming the fastest runner in his school. He is artistic and sensitive but feels inadequate at home, where his father values practicality. When the Burkes move in next door, Jesse meets Leslie Burke, an imaginative and free-spirited girl who quickly becomes his friend. Despite an initial rivalry over running, they forge a deep bond. Together they discover a dry creek bed in the woods and create an imaginary kingdom they name Terabithia, where they reign as king and queen. In Terabithia, they escape the pressures of school, family, and poverty, using their imagination to overcome symbolic monsters and challenges. The novel builds toward a profound and tragic event that forces Jesse to confront loss, grief, and the power of memory, ultimately leading him to a new understanding of courage and love.

Katherine Paterson drew inspiration from a real tragedy: her son's close friend, Lisa Hill, was struck and killed by lightning when she was eight years old. Paterson's own son, David, struggled with the loss, and the novel is dedicated to him. The book's emotional honesty and unflinching treatment of death made it a landmark in children's literature. It won the Newbery Medal in 1978 and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The novel has been adapted into a 1985 television film and a 2007 feature film starring Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb, as well as a stage musical that premiered in 2008.
