Production involved a unique geographical separation: while Simon and Garfunkel recorded their vocals in New York, the lush instrumentation featuring piano, bass, drums, and strings was tracked by Los Angeles session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew. Paul Simon wrote the title track specifically for Art Garfunkel, who initially hesitated to sing it alone but eventually accepted the role after Simon convinced him of its potential.
