The brand quickly gained renown for revolutionizing women's fashion, introducing iconic pieces such as the tuxedo jacket for women, the safari jacket, and the transparent blouse. Today, YSL operates as a subsidiary of the Kering group, alongside Gucci, Balenciaga, and Bottega Veneta, with headquarters at 37 Rue de Bellechasse, 75007 Paris. The company produces ready-to-wear clothing, couture, leather accessories, footwear, and fragrances, with handbags accounting for roughly 70% of its global turnover.

Under the leadership of CEO Cédric Charbit and creative director Anthony Vaccarello (who succeeded Hedi Slimane in 2016), the brand has maintained its position as the second most profitable label in the Kering portfolio by financial performance, trailing only Gucci. In 2022, YSL reported total revenue of €3.3 billion, a 31% increase from the prior year, though revenue dipped to €2.9 billion in 2024. The brand operates 282 stores worldwide and targets middle- and upper-class consumers, positioning itself in the elite premium segment of the luxury market.

Marketing strategies have included high-profile celebrity ambassadors such as BLACKPINK's Rosé, named the first-ever global global ambassador in July 2020, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The brand has successfully incorporated street culture into its image without sacrificing its exclusive luxury status. A notable controversy has been the questioning of its value proposition, with critics arguing that materials used are often comparable to those in lower-priced brands, challenging the premium justified by the brand name alone.
