About
WWE NXT launched on February 23, 2010, as a reality-competition series where rookies vied for a WWE contract. Paul Levesque, better known as Triple H, spearheaded the concept and later transformed it into a full developmental territory in 2012, absorbing Florida Championship Wrestling. Based at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, NXT quickly built a reputation for spectacular in-ring action and compelling storytelling, especially during its celebrated black and gold era from 2014 to 2021. Critics and hardcore fans often ranked it above Raw and SmackDown for match quality, with events like NXT TakeOver: New Orleans and NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III becoming instant classics.
In 2019, NXT expanded to a live two-hour show on USA Network, going head-to-head with All Elite Wrestling's Dynamite in the Wednesday Night Wars. Though AEW won most nights in total viewers, NXT held strong in the 18-49 demographic and pushed both brands to raise their game. After the war ended in 2021, NXT rebranded as NXT 2.0, shifting focus to homegrown talent recruited from college sports and international backgrounds. The bright new look and younger roster marked a deliberate move away from the independent veteran-heavy approach of the black and gold days.
Today NXT airs on The CW network and continues to develop future main event stars. Recent graduates like Bianca Belair, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins all honed their craft in NXT before becoming faces of the company. The brand also produces premium live events such as NXT Stand & Deliver during WrestleMania weekend, and its championships remain highly coveted. With Triple H overseeing creative as WWE's Chief Content Officer and Shawn Michaels serving as Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative, NXT remains the essential proving ground for the next generation of WWE superstars.
