About
Truth Social launched in February 2022 as a microblogging platform built by Trump Media & Technology Group. The company was actually founded a year earlier, in February 2021, by Andy Litinsky and Wes Moss, not directly by Donald Trump, though Trump is the platform's namesake and majority owner. The service emerged directly after Trump's bans from Twitter and Facebook following the January 6 Capitol attack, positioning itself as a free speech alternative to mainstream social networks. In design it closely resembles Twitter, allowing users to post short messages, follow accounts, and share content.
Trump Media & Technology Group went public on March 26, 2024 through a reverse merger with Digital World Acquisition Corp., a special-purpose acquisition company, trading on Nasdaq under the ticker DJT. The company is headquartered in Sarasota, Florida. As of 2026, Kevin J. McGurn serves as interim CEO, with Boris Epshteyn as chairman. Former U.S. Representative Devin Nunes previously held the CEO role after resigning from Congress in late 2021. Trump himself holds approximately 52 to 59 percent of TMTG shares through the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust.
In early 2025, TMTG expanded beyond social media by launching Truth.Fi, a financial services brand offering separately managed accounts and exchange-traded funds. The company has also announced plans to enter cryptocurrency and prediction markets, including a partnership with Crypto.com for political event betting. In December 2025, TMTG announced a $6 billion merger with TAE Technologies to build what they describe as the world's first utility-scale fusion power plant, targeting 50 megawatts of electricity and closure by Q4 2026.
Truth Social competes in a small ecosystem of alternative social apps catering to conservative audiences, alongside platforms like Parler, Gab, and Rumble. The platform has been downloaded millions of times but has faced significant scaling issues and criticism for bugs. TMTG reported revenue of $3.6 million in 2024 with a net loss of $400.9 million. As of June 2026, the company's market capitalization had fallen to approximately $2.2 billion, down from an all-time high of roughly $8.7 billion in January 2025. Despite the losses, the company ended 2024 with $2.1 billion in cash and short-term investments.
