Total Nonstop Action Wrestling

On a spring evening in 2002, three men sat in a Nashville diner sketching out a wrestling promotion on a napkin. Jeff Jarrett, his father Jerry Jarrett, and digital media pioneer Bob Ryder had watched World Championship Wrestling collapse the year before, leaving WWE as the only national player. They wanted to build something different. That something became Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.

TNA launched on May 10, 2002, initially running weekly pay-per-views from the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. The company had no TV deal, no major backer, and a roster of wrestlers many fans had never heard of. But it had a gimmick: a six-sided ring, and a division called the X Division that emphasized flips, dives, and high-risk maneuvers. That division became the company's calling card. Wrestlers like AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, and Samoa Joe built reputations there that later carried them to global stardom.

Financial survival was never easy. Early funding from HealthSouth evaporated in a corporate scandal. Panda Energy International, owned by Dixie Carter's family, bought a majority stake in 2004, and Carter became president. The company moved to a weekly TV show on Fox Sports Net, then Spike TV, where it ran for a decade. Ownership shifted again in the 2010s: Panda sold its stake, Billy Corgan invested and briefly served as president, and finally Anthem Sports & Entertainment took over in 2017. The promotion rebranded as Impact Wrestling that year, then returned to the TNA name in January 2024.

Today TNA broadcasts on AMC and AMC+, runs its own streaming service TNA+, and promotes major events like Slammiversary, set for June 28, 2026. Its roster includes names like Moose, Eric Young, and a Knockouts division that has been a consistent highlight. The company has never matched WWE's scale, but it has outlasted every other American wrestling startup of the 2000s. That napkin in Nashville turned into something real. [edit]
