Thames Water

Thames Water is the company responsible for keeping the taps flowing and the sewers clear for over 15 million people across London and the surrounding areas. This private utility company holds a monopoly over a vast region, a position it has maintained since the privatization of the UK's water industry in 1989. Its origins, however, stretch much further back, with roots tracing to the New River Company founded in 1609. The company's name aptly reflects its operational heart, drawing water from the River Thames and numerous other sources.

Managing an enormous network of pipes, treatment works, and reservoirs, Thames Water is the largest water and wastewater provider in the United Kingdom. Its infrastructure includes impressive feats of engineering like the Thames Water Ring Main and a significant desalination plant in Beckton. Each day, it supplies billions of litres of drinking water and processes an even larger volume of wastewater. Despite this scale, the company faces persistent challenges with its aging infrastructure, leading to frequent leaks and significant environmental pollution incidents, which have resulted in numerous legal penalties.

The company's financial situation has been a major point of public and governmental concern. Holding over £16 billion in debt, Thames Water has been criticized for distributing large dividends to its shareholders, a group primarily composed of pension and overseas investment funds. In recent years, reports of impending financial collapse have surfaced repeatedly.
