    About

The Tata Group, India's largest conglomerate, operates from Mumbai House in Mumbai. Founded in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata with a capital of ₹21,000, the group has grown into a network of over 100 affiliate companies spanning steel, automobiles, IT, hospitality, consumer goods, and more. Tata Sons serves as the principal holding company, with 66% of its equity held by the philanthropic Tata Trusts. As of October 2025, more than 20 publicly listed Tata companies have a combined market capitalization of ₹31.17 trillion (US$330 billion). The group's portfolio includes Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel, and consumer brands such as Tata Salt and Tata Tea. With operations in over 100 countries and more than one million employees, the Tata Group is known for its ethical business practices and commitment to social responsibility.

Jamsetji Tata's early ventures laid the foundation for India's industrial revolution. He established the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in 1903, India's first luxury hotel, and initiated plans for what became Tata Steel, which began production in 1911. He also founded the Indian Institute of Science in 1909, a philanthropic venture. After his death in 1904, his sons Dorabji Tata and Ratanji Tata expanded the group, with Dorabji serving as chairman until 1932. J.R.D. Tata took leadership in 1938 and served for over 50 years, founding Tata Airlines in 1932 (later Air India) and Tata Consultancy Services in 1968. Ratan Tata served as chairman from 1991 to 2012, orchestrating global acquisitions including Tetley Tea in 2000, Corus Steel in 2007, and Jaguar Land Rover in 2008. N. Chandrasekaran, former CEO of TCS, has been chairman since January 2017.

The group's brand identity centers on trust, reliability, and innovation, symbolized by its blue logo adopted in the early 2000s. The tagline 'Tata: Transforming Lives' was introduced in 2012. The Tata Code of Conduct, established in 1998, guides the group's emphasis on integrity and social responsibility. Notable marketing campaigns include Tata Tea Jaago Re (2007), which promoted social awakening, and Tata Salt: Desh Ka Namak (2019), which tapped into national pride. The group's philanthropic arm, Tata Trusts, donates roughly 5% of profits to education, healthcare, and rural development.
