Supercell
Finland"Quality over quantity"
About
Ilkka Paananen, Mikael Hed, and Jari Huuhtanen launched Supercell in May 2010 after their browser studio Comware Games released Gunshine.net. The trio pivoted to mobile development the following year, establishing a strict "kill or launch" policy that kills projects failing to meet high internal benchmarks before they ever reach players.
The company operates on a flat structure where small autonomous teams of five to seven people manage the entire lifecycle of a game. This cell model keeps the workforce lean at around 350 to 400 employees despite global offices in Helsinki, San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai, and London.
Financial stability arrived with Tencent Holdings acquiring an 84% stake in April 2023 for roughly $8.6 billion. The deal valued the company at approximately $10 billion while allowing Supercell to retain full creative control and operational independence under Paananen's leadership.
