    About

In September 1972, a group of animators from the bankrupt Mushi Production, the studio founded by Osamu Tezuka, broke away to form their own company. They called it Sunrise Studio. For the first few years, the fledgling studio worked as a subcontractor, handling animation for other productions. Then came 1977 and Invincible Super Man Zambot 3, the first original television series bearing the Sunrise name. It was a mecha show, a genre that would come to define the studio.

Everything changed in 1979. Yoshiyuki Tomino's Mobile Suit Gundam premiered to low ratings and was cut short. But reruns and a theatrical compilation trilogy turned it into a phenomenon. Bandai's plastic model kits of the giant robots flew off shelves, proving that merchandise could generate far more revenue than broadcast rights. That business model, create a show to sell toys, became Sunrise's engine. Over the next four decades, the Gundam franchise alone spawned dozens of TV series, films, OVAs, manga, and video games, generating roughly ¥100 billion in annual merchandise sales.

Sunrise's creative range extended far beyond mecha. Cowboy Bebop (1998) blended jazz, noir, and space western into a cult classic that won international acclaim. Code Geass (2006) paired political intrigue with mecha battles and became a global hit. Love Live! (2013) launched a multimedia idol franchise that became a commercial juggernaut. The studio produced over 300 titles, earning a reputation for technical polish and ambitious storytelling. In 2022, Bandai Namco merged Sunrise with Bandai Namco Pictures to form Bandai Namco Filmworks, consolidating its animation operations under president Makoto Asanuma. The studio continues to produce new Gundam series, a live-action film with Legendary Entertainment, and a new Cowboy Bebop anime announced in 2024.
