Strategy, originally named MicroStrategy, was founded in 1989 by Michael J. Saylor and Sanju Bansal as a business intelligence and analytics software company. For over three decades, it developed tools that helped organizations analyze data for decision-making and built mobile applications, competing in the enterprise software market against companies like SAP and Oracle. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, the firm went public in 1998 and established itself as a steady, if unspectacular, player in the tech industry.

Everything changed in 2020. Saylor announced that the company would adopt Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset, arguing that the cryptocurrency offered superior long-term value preservation compared to cash. Over the following years, Strategy used cash flow from its software business and proceeds from debt offerings to acquire enormous quantities of Bitcoin, eventually becoming the largest corporate holder of the digital currency in the world. By 2025, the company held over 200,000 bitcoins, worth tens of billions of dollars at peak prices. The company's stock price became closely correlated with Bitcoin's value, effectively turning Strategy into a publicly traded proxy for the cryptocurrency.

In 2024, the company rebranded from MicroStrategy to Strategy to align its corporate identity with its new focus. While the legacy software business continues to operate, generating roughly $500 million in annual revenue, the company's primary public identity is now that of a Bitcoin investment vehicle. Saylor remains CEO and the most vocal advocate for the strategy, regularly promoting Bitcoin adoption at conferences and on social media. The approach has drawn both fervent supporters and sharp critics. Supporters see it as a visionary hedge against inflation; critics point to the extreme volatility and the risk of tying a public company's fate to a speculative asset.
