    About

In the summer of 1977, George Lucas unleashed a space opera that changed movies forever. Star Wars opened in just 32 theaters on May 25, but word of mouth turned it into a phenomenon. Lines snaked around blocks. People saw it ten, twenty times. The film earned over $775 million worldwide, a staggering sum for the era. Lucas had built his own visual-effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, to create things no one had seen before: dogfights in space, a giant walking tank, a mystical energy field called the Force. The story of a farm boy, a rogue smuggler, and a princess fighting an evil empire struck a nerve. It was myth dressed in technology, and it worked.

Lucas followed with two sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), that completed what became known as the original trilogy. Then came a sixteen-year gap. In 1999, Lucas returned with The Phantom Menace, the first of three prequels. Those films divided fans but grossed billions. In 2012, Lucas sold his company, Lucasfilm, to Disney for $4.05 billion. Disney immediately announced a sequel trilogy, starting with The Force Awakens (2015), which made nearly $2 billion and became the highest-grossing film in North America at the time. Standalone movies like Rogue One (2016) and Solo (2018) followed, along with a flood of television series on Disney+: The Mandalorian, Andor, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew.

Today Star Wars is more than movies. It's a sprawling universe of novels, comics, video games, from LEGO Star Wars to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and immersive theme-park lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The brand has generated over $70 billion in lifetime revenue. Its iconography, Darth Vader's helmet, the Millennium Falcon, John Williams' score, is instantly recognizable worldwide. The franchise has faced controversy: backlash against the sequel trilogy, harassment of actors like Kelly Marie Tran, and the closure of the Galactic Starcruiser hotel in 2023. Yet it remains a cultural force, with new films in development from directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and a growing presence on streaming. Star Wars endures because its core story, hope against tyranny, never gets old.
